Generative Art Project (2018-2020)
Located on E. 6th St. in Austin, TX, the Project was co-founded by Julia Morton and James Pricer.
The gallery featured generative art, which is art made by humans working in creative collaboration with autonomous, non-human systems such as code, math, data, sound, AI, and 3D.
We represented Shirley Steele, E9, Tyler Hobbs, Sean Capone, Simon Russell, James Pricer, Alba Correll, Leo Bleicher, David Bennett, Viktor Velikanov, Josh Winters, and d.o.s.
The artist’s statements are listed below, followed by photos of exhibitions, followed by some press clips.
-
Shirley Steele
“I work in creative coding, animation, printmaking, and sometimes, a little paint. My artwork explores concepts in language and technology, inspired by my love of language and my experience as a research scientist in computer speech. My work is a visual exploration of verbal ideas.”
- Shirley Steele

ESSTRO9 - E9
EDUARDO MEDINA - ESSTRO9 - creates installations, audiovisual performances, and immersive A/V concerts . His art is based on an interest in sound and image, and the pictorial-sculptural characteristics of digital image construction in generative animation.
-
Tyler Hobbs
Tyler Hobbs is a visual artist from Austin, Texas who works primarily with algorithms, plotters, and paint. His artwork focuses on computational aesthetics, how they are shaped by the biases of modern computer hardware and software, and how they relate to and interact with the natural world around us.

Sean Capone
I have worked extensively in the digital video and animation field for over 20 years, and have developed a wide-ranging body of work across its many aspects: film & TV, video games, music videos, gallery and museum exhibitions, festival presentations, event and stage scenography, and site-specific public art installations.

Simon Russell
I’m a motion designer and 3D generalist but a lot of the work I do is based around music and events. A lot of this work is driven by my more experimental work in visualising audio and sonification. I’ve recently starting producing art with a robotic pen plotter.

James Pricer
I have spent my life creating innovations that disrupt stagnation. The decision to use data as an art medium is a continuation of that project. My process begins with the search for intriguing data, which I then mine for patterns and outliers . Using generative software, I transform the chosen data into visuals that serve my aesthetic goals.

Alba Corral
With a background in computer engineering, Alba Corral has been creating generative art using software and coding for the past decade. By combining generative systems with improvised drawing techniques, her digital language becomes organic, creating mesmerising digital landscapes. She is known for her live performances where she integrates real-time coding and drawing in collaboration with musicians.

Leo Bleicher
“In art, as in many other domains, new tools enable and inspire new ways of working. My goal as a creator of visual art and sculpture is to harness the power of evolution. Exploring the possibilities over the past 17 years, an ever-widening landscape of has been revealed and thus, through the process of discovery and invention, I too have evolved.” - Leo Bleicher
-
David Bennett
“My intent is to present an accessible body of work that is appealing and entertaining to a wide-reaching audience. Playful exploration and discovery are my guiding principles, fueled by a lifelong fascination with the blend of art and technology. In these selections, I aspire to enliven the experience of viewers through the use of pattern, color, and rhythm.” – David Bennett

Viktor Velikanov
New. Throughout history, people have searched for a new way to express and record their experiences. I'm using emerging technologies to find new forms to envision a new visual language that captures my sense of reality and aesthetic sensibilities. What does "new" look like? Each time I begin a work of art, I ask myself that question. The art I create is my answer. - Viktor Velikanov
-
Josh Winters
“My mission is to create visualizations of data driven and stochastic models demonstrating how our society functions at its core. I want to show the whole system for those who only ever see a part of it.” - Josh Winters

d.o.s.
d.o.s. / Harry Martis is a polymath. His art incorporates music, math, medicine, performance art, coding, and science fiction. His imagery oscillates between narrative and abstraction. While his themes consistently express his optimistic belief in the human spirit balanced against his pessimistic view of technology in the hands of unchecked power.
“Stumbled upon this installation while exploring Austin and was not disappointed. I was introduced to the up and coming movement of Generative art and was given a hands on experience in the technology and software behind the art. Would highly recommend to everyone. ”
“Really interesting art gallery with an intimate setting. It is located right on E 6th street and the owner is lovely and very happy to answer any questions. Happy to say that I have a piece of art from Julia’s.”
“One of my favorite finds during a recent trip to Austin. Some fascinating and innovative digital works on display in this art gallery. Definitely worth checking out if you have the opportunity.”
